No. A database management system, IMAGE included, operates so as to give you
the impression that a disparate set of files act as a unit whole -- but that
impression only applies within the context of the DBMS. In the case of IMAGE,
it is commands such as DBOPEN that manage this illusion for you (as well as a
few auxiliary programs, such as STORE).

Otherwise, any other program that hasn't gone to the trouble of promoting
this illusion must handle its opens and reads of the files that comprise the
"database" as if they were independent files, no different than if they were
just a collection of disparate and unrelated files.
