Hi HP3000-L,
Lately I've been running a packet sniffer on my DSL connection looking for ICMP
packets because my ISP has had some recent problems with abusive pings (not
directed AT me, but nonetheless visible to me due to the bridged nature of
DSL). As a result, I just discovered that the ITRC will ping you one or more
times when you visit the home page at http://itrc.hp.com.
Does anybody know what's going on here? My guess would be that the ITRC web
server(s) are using this information for load balancing, perhaps making the
assumption that a browser with fast ping times will be capable of putting more
demand on the web server than a browser with slow ping times.
