Folks,
does somebody have a short explanation on some services in /SYS/NET/SERVICES
(aka /etc/services) which are configured per default ? Especially why they are
needed ?
Background: within an audit, CyberCop detected these services on the HP3000 and
valued them as a
"low risk".
The services CyperCop put into question are
TCP Port Service Description Needed ?
7 echo
9 discard
13 daytime
19 chargen
21 ftp File Transport Protocol YES
23 telnet Telnet NOT REALLY ...
25 smtp Sendmail/iX YES
37 time
80 www Web Services (Apache/iX) YES
987 unknown SQL distributed access YES
Interesting enough: CyperCop didn't detect
53 domain Domain Name Service
67 bootps Bootstrap Protocol Server
68 bootpc " " Client
110 pop3 POP3 email YES
137 nmbp Samba/iX YES
139 smbp Samba/iX YES
514 shell remote command
514 syslog Syslog/iX YES
Thanks in advance, Andreas Schmidt, CSC, Germany
