I was fairly happy with Pegasus DOS when I used it years ago and elm
recently.  One further recommendation is mutt.  It's threaded and has
specific support for listservs as well as quite a few other things.  And,
being "steam-powered" also *can't* auto-execute incoming scripts.  Not sure
what-all platforms it supports, as I have a linux box handy on which to run
it :-).
