I have gone full circle on all of this. 4GL tools (not languages) are
certainly seductive in their promise to deliver results more quickly
and, by and large, simplify the task for the programmer. But then, by
and large, they turn out to be resource hogs. I prefer Cobol. However,
the 4GL we use, Protos, does answer one problem with most 4GLs. It
generates Cobol and doesn't have all the added overhead at run time.
