I used AUTOINST to install PowerPatch 7.
Could be that Patch/iX modifies the USER VERSION. But then so can anyone who
is able to make an SLT and do an UPDATE.

Or maybe not. Apparently under some circumstances the user version is
changed. For example, all three of my systems on 5.5 pp7 show something like
this:

showme
USER: #S5044,MGR.SYSMGR,PUB      (NOT IN BREAK)
RELEASE: C.55.00   MPE/iX HP31900 C.05.08   USER VERSION: C.55.07
CURRENT: FRI, MAY 12, 2000,  1:35 PM
LOGON:   FRI, MAY 12, 2000,  5:59 AM

...

So, the "user version" seems to show the PowerPatch level in all cases.
Note: I used PATCH/iX exclusively to update these systems.
