I had a 918RX in a "computer room" that was about 12-by-12 and shared with
about half a dozen servers of various types. However, in that case, the
room was both filtered and air-conditioned. We also had a largish Compaq
server (about the size/heat characteristics of a 918) that was in a
fan-ventilated wiring closet, and didn't have any significant problems,
although I did spend more time on cleaning and PM than one might imagine.
In your situation, I sure would push for a space that could be both filtered
and air-conditioned. In my experience, those small 3000's can tolerate
fairly high temperatures, but absolutely will not tolerate wide fluctuations
in temperature nor will they accept blowing dust and dirt. HP says the
small machines are "desk-top" friendly, but that's not what I've seen.

Subject: HPe3000 Working Environment
I may have an opportunity to work with a local small business in placing an
HPe3000 (plus the software) in their place of business. This presents a
problem, since like many small businesses, they do not have what I consider
to be the "standard" computer room environment. In this case, the computer
would most likely be located next to their counter in a building with no air
conditioning and which is open to the outside, allowing lots of dust and
dirt into the building (hey, this is a farm machinery parts and auction
house).
What is the recommended working environment for an HPe3000?
What would you suggest in this situation? I'm thinking perhaps of a small
"closet" type of enclosure with a fan and filter to at least keep the dirt
out of the e3k.
Any other ideas?
