Perhaps I am just playing devil's advocate, but one reason to offer both
FTP and HTTP (and leaving the syntax extensible for future xxTPs) is
that companies often have strange firewall configurations which are
often under the control of the firewall gods, not the HP 3000 ones.  I
can envision a situation where the firewall might block one protocol,
but let the other pass through.  The ability to use either might prove
invaluable in that case.
