Some things to check:
ls -ld /tmp /tmp/*
Does /tmp have rwxrwxrwx (i.e. chmod 777) permissions?
Are you logged on as the owning user of the subdirectories?
Are you current on patches? There's an old bug where an rm -fR will fail to
completely purge a directory tree and end up leaving the file open count
bogusly non-zero. You will have to reboot your machine to clear the open
counts. The :PURGEDIR ;TREE command doesn't suffer from this bug.
The patch ID that fixes this problem no longer resides in my brain.
However, it should be found in the HP3000-L archives, or the HPRC should be
able to assist you.
