Maybe this is a convenient lie, so no one gets blamed, and little or no
action has to be taken...

More than a few people have had their old 486s mysteriously contract the
latest hard-drive destroying virus mentioned in the headline news, right on
schedule, which of course justifies a replacement (sorry that this idea
comes too late for anyone to contract a leap day virus on their aging PC).
