There is also some good information on the Cisco routers if you have access
to it.  You can enter the command:  "show interface ethernet0 (or other
interface)".  There is a 5 minute input rate and a 5 minute output rate
displayed near the end of the listing.  You could also clear the counters
for that interface and manually time a period (say 5 minutes), then recheck
the counters to see how many packets/bytes were input or output during that
time period.  The clear command is:  "clear counters ethernet0".

Also, look for high collision rates both on the HP3000 and the router
interface.  Your switch(es) might also give some insight.
