You may have noticed an absence of HP3000-L mail between 5:30 PM and
10:30 PM EST (despite the mail timestamps) Thursday night.  We lost all
four of our Internet links during that time.  The story reads like one
of Jeff Foxworthy's "You could be a redneck if..." routines (with
apologies to non-US readers).  Some clown in Widow's Creek, Alabama
shredded an above-ground fiber cable with a shotgun.

No joke.

It was a primary MCI-hosted backbone link serving much of the southeast
USA.  While we do not contract directly with MCI, our
providers apparently subcontract from MCI for this particular long
haul link.
