We are using Oracle 7.2.3 for a data warehouse on our 3000, with feeds once
a day, with reports generated over the greater part of the (calendar) day,
so our use may not match yours. We are on a private volume set, mirrored,
with no resulting hangs.
When we have seen hangs, which is mercifully rare, it has been due to
network problems. When the men in black have been secretly twiddling the
network (we are assured that nothing had changed when trouble starts, nor
when it subsequently stops. I conclude from this that the network group does
no actual work on the network; they must merely monitor it) and we have
"lost" our gateway router, on occasion, after our netcontrol update, the
Oracle listener will be hung, such that we have to orakill TNSLSNR (stop the
listener), stop the database, then restart the database and the listener. We
now have jobs for the various combinations of these tasks.
