Cynthia,
We have done this with a HP4000N and a product called Print Cube Plus. It
originally was made by Wilco Ams I now get them from:

 Light Source
 621 2nd Lane
 Vero Beach, Fl
 32962

  Ph: 561-562-5046
  Fx: 561-778-5428

They perform the status checking that HP serial printer would do but allow
you to hook up the printer via parallel. I have about three of them in use
now. Configuring them is a little hard but they work great once installed.

Subject: HP4050N printers

We have a site that wants to use an HP4050N printer; however, this site is
still
connected to us via mux....at least until the network people have time to
get
their LAN server installed (several months out). Is there anyway to
successfully
do this? I've noticed some traffic on this topic, but so far no one has
mentioned
trying to use this as a serial device through a mux.

We've tried configuring it as a type 18 and 22 printer and tried various
pinouts,
but so far have not hit the right combination to make this printer work.
Also, the
spooler drops continually when attempting to make it print. Any ideas are
welcome.
