i got the chance to dig a bit into this finally..... at 3:53 this morning, the
network was stopped on this machine -- without the benefit of stopping all the
background (read 'network dependent') jobs first <sigh> so 'host is down' means
*host* me, myself, i :-) stopping and restarting syslog cleared up the
problem. - d
