Just yesterday, I tried writing to a 60 meter tape with a DDS-2 drive and
got the same 'no write ring' message and was puzzled too. Mike Hornsby
happened to be nearby and he told me that the tape did not have a 'media
recognition symbol' on it. He showed me a tape drive unit sitting on a
shelf that had on its underside a dip switch bank. He said that one of the
switches on the tape drive unit (#3?) controls whether or not the tape drive
only recognizes tapes with MRS or ignores MRS completely. So, it appears
that the tape drive I was using had the setting set to 'ignore non MRS
tapes'.
I got out a scratch tape that had the 'media recognition symbol' on it and
used it instead.
