That's the weird part -- ftp, telnet, etc. work just fine.
They can get to the outside, but Python can't.
I've found our firewall passes everything, but proxies HTTP,
so I'm thinking it's a Python URLLIB proxy setup (somehow)
-- now I just have to find the settings for that...

I don't know Python, but I'd guess that your problem might be
/etc/resolv.conf. Make sure that exists as a symbolic link pointing
to
/SYS/NET/RESLVCNF, and make sure that RESLVCNF contains proper DNS
information. It could be that FTP and the other functional
applications aren't
relying on /etc/resolv.conf. Not everything does.
There's only one default gateway MPE, shared by all applications.
