I have to disagree with Birket on this one. Birket points out that CSY had
shown a roadmap depicting the HP 3000 for the next 2 years followed by IA-64.
He further points out no such roadmap existed for the NT box manufacturers.
This is incorrect. First off, NT is made by Microsoft. Next month Windows
2000 Professional, Server and Advanced Server will be released to the public at
large. Later, DataCenter server will be released. This last one scales to 32
CPUs, whereas the first 3 scale to 2, 4 and 8 CPUs respectively. MS has
indicated that Windows 2000 (NT) will be in 64 bits in the future so that it
can run natively on IA-64 (Merced and follow-ons.)

BTW, I have Windows 2000 Pro RC2 installed on my laptop. I think it is
excellent. NT 4.0 has been extremely robust both for the office server, for my
laptop and for other desktops but W2K brings in more flexibility.

Now, the CPUs for NT servers are made by Intel, AMD or Compaq (Digital). The
computer manufacturers follow these companies lead when they make their roadmap
for the future. So if you want to know what is in store OS wise for NT, you
look to Microsoft. If you want to know what is in store hardware wise for NT,
you look to Intel, AMD and Compaq (Digital), and Microsoft also, since they are
involved in the specification of the hardware support for NT. The roadmap is
clear. For Intel, it is Xeon, Willamette (IA-32) and then Merced IA-64. There
is a similar roadmap for AMD however I am less familiar with that line. These
roadmaps carry us through 2002 and beyond. The computer manufacturers put
together the hardware which includes proprietary or OEM devices and hardware,
including one or more CPUs and then either preload NT or sell it as is.

When the HP 3000 is available on IA-64, its future roadmap will also be tied to
Intel, just like the NT and UNIX boxes.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

Subject: Re: Life Expectancy

To help with the Life Expectancy story ... HP has a marketing piece which is
from April 1999, which shows the roadmap for the HP3000 out to 2002 with an
IA64 part in the roadmap arriving in 2002 ... I don't think you will find such
a roadmap for NT boxes (regardless of manufacturer).

There are people in the HP3000 (CSY) team who are working on making sure the
next generation of peripherals will plug and play with the HP3000. Dave Snow
gives a great presentation on this topic.

The part number for this marketing piece is 5968-5346E ... I would be pleased
to Snail Mail copies to anyone who needs one to help tell the roadmap story. I
am hoping that Christine Martino and Winston Prather will be providing an
updated version of this document with the February announcements.

I trust the new year will bring lots of opportunity to highlight the HP3000 in
business stories ... I know that our web & client-server contest is bringing
out some real great examples of the HP3000 as the server for "state-of-the-art"
- see our web site at www.MBFoster.com for details ...

Welcome to the Year 2000 ... what have you got planned???
