A few clarifications on my continuing "network problem" reports are
perhaps in order, I think there was some miscommunication! I've been
talking about intermittent problems, e.g., you can't get mail from
cecasun sometimes, but turn around and try again and it works, etc.

Apparently the Hunter Microlab mistook this to be more permanent and
were directing students to the UC lab with a "No Internet" sign on their
door. In actuality, we inadvertently left them disconnected
when doing diagnostics and repairs Thursday night - early Friday
morning. That was fixed today.

We also had some minor problems with some new equipment we installed
particularly in Holt and Fine Arts which made some Appletalk zones
disappear. We have pulled the new gear back out for further testing
and put things back the way they were.

The continuing problem of "dropped packets" that I have been working
on, where our academic router was dropping millions of packets, is
close to being solved. After isolating some suspected machines today
before noon, we have only dropped a grand total of 42 packets at this
time (10:00 PM Wednesday) out of millions. So, while I'm not ready
to give it a clean bill of health just yet, it appears the diseased
parties are in quarantine.

Special note to Records/Registration/Advisement/Graduate Office and
others with the few remaining "Gandalf-connected" printers and terminals
that have been bouncing the last week or two: Richard Gambrell and I
rolled up our sleeves, pulled up numerous floor tiles,
yanked out a couple hundred feet of 10-year-old coax, and almost
completely rewired the whole "legacy" network that runs those printers
and terminals. Hopefully this will eliminate the recent hangups, but
after seeing all the relics we dragged out with that cable... :-)
