The National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced a competition date for
its Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program. The ATE program
promotes improved technological education in undergraduate and secondary
schools, professional development of college and secondary school faculty,
internship and field experiences for faculty, teachers, and students, and
model regional center development.

ATE funded programs require partnerships between two-year colleges and
four-year colleges so that students are able to make successful transitions
from Associate Degree programs to Bachelor Degree programs. The ATE program
provides two important opportunities for UTC faculty members: (1) to serve
on review panels, and (2) to apply for a grant

Serving on a Review Panel: Serving on an NSF review panel is an excellent
way to learn about the agency and the program, and those who serve on review
panels significantly enhance their chances of future funding. Faculty
interested in being reviewers should contact the Office of Grants and
Program Review and provide a vita as soon as possible.

Applying for a Grant: This year, the NSF is expected to award 70 ATE grants
for a total of $40 million in funding. Optional preliminary proposals are
due by April 23, 2003, and the full application deadline is October 15,
2003. If you are interested in developing a proposal, you might consider
serving as a proposal reviewer this year to get acquainted with the program
and meet program staff, and then apply next year.

More information about the ATE program is available on the NSF website at
the following web address: http://www.nsf.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?nsf03523

The following programs provide some examples of ATE programs involving
four-year institutions:
· “Lexington Collaborative for Revitalizing and Improving Middle
 Mathematics” https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/servlet/showaward?award=0101686
· “ATE Regional Center for Nanofabrication Manufacturing Education”
