Dear Friends,

We have all felt the need in recent days to show our support for victims of
the recent terrorist attacks in New York and Washington and their families.
The UTC students who are the members of the UTC Symphony are no exception.
Last Tuesday, several of them expressed a desire to "do something" in
recognition and remembrance of the victims. I had similar feelings, and
thought it very appropriate to pay a musical tribute to these fallen
everyday heroes.

Our first UTC Symphony concert of the year is scheduled for September 28,
2001, at 8 pm in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall. We are dedicating this
performance to the memory of the victims in NYC and Washington. Although
some of the program was selected and prepared before we knew of the attack,
we have been able to make a few appropriate last-minute additions:

The *Chattanooga Singers* (Professor Glenn Draper, Conductor and Music
Director) will appear on this concert with the UTC Symphony, performing the
following works:

Schubert - Mass in G, D. 167
Three Choruses from Handel's Messiah

Steven Bird will lead the orchestra and chorus in performances of these works:

"Battle Hymn of the Republic" (arr. Wilhousky)
"America the Beautiful" (audience participation/sing)

The UTC Symphony will also perform these instrumental works on the program:

Vaughan Williams - English Folk Songs Suite
Haydn - Symphony no. 100 ("Military")

We are reviving a tradition that has fallen into some disuse in recent
years at symphony concerts nationwide -- each concert this year will open
with the singing and playing of the "Star-Spangled Banner".

We hope that you will join us for this free patriotic program in the Hayes
Concert Hall at 8 pm on September 28.

Sincerely,
