The Department of Chemistry would like to invite you to the seminar:
HOW TVA'S NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS WORK AND THE IMPORTANCE OF CHEMISTRY
ON REACTOR OPERATIONS
JIM LEMONS
TVA
Manager Of Reactor Core Design
2:00PM
FRIDAY
OCTOBER 1, 2004
ROOM 420- GROTE HALL
Mr. Jim Lemons (Manager Of Reactor Core Design) will discuss the two
types of reactors that TVA operates, the basic mechanics of the major
systems, a little about neutronics and the reactor fuel and core
(probably bring a model fuel assembly for demonstration), and then
discuss the role of chemistry: (1) for reactivity and power control,
(2) importance in determining failed or leaking fuel rods, (3)
chemical means to radiation dose reduction, and (4) the chemical
means to increasing reactor systems materials lifetime by preventing
or reducing stress corrosion cracking.
