Dear Faculty, Staff and Students:

In the past few days, several media outlets have produced stories
focused on the 25 year old University of Tennessee airplane as well
as specific trips made on the King Air 200B. We have provided
numerous documents to the news media clearly showing passengers on
these flights and, in the case of any trip when I was a passenger,
the calendar information on the purpose of the flight. I followed
existing and long-established UT policies in the use of the UT
airplane.

As is frequently the case, however, rumors abound. For this reason, I
sent a letter today to Senator Jerry Cooper, Chair of the
legislature's Joint Fiscal Review Committee. In the letter, I told
Senator Cooper that I have asked the State Comptroller of the
Treasury "to fully and completely review use of the University of
Tennessee aircraft and make recommendations based on these findings."
I welcome this opportunity to address incorrect information. A
complete copy of my letter is available at
http://president.tennessee.edu/announce/utplane.shtml.

Cordially,

John W. Shumaker
President
