UTC DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY
SAFETY GRAM
Dale "Mac" McNeely Chief Larry C. Lockmiller Operations Lt.

As Halloween approaches lets take a minute to consider Halloween safety for
trick-or-treaters, parents, and home owners. We are pleased to provide
these tips.

Trick -or -Treaters
*Walk, don't run, and carry a flashlight. Stay on sidewalks and obey traffic
signals.
*Don't cut across yards or driveways and stay in familiar neighborhoods.
*Avoid wearing masks when walking house to house.
*Carry only flexible knives, swords, or other props.
*If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left hand side of the road facing
traffic.
*Wear clothing with reflective markings or tape.
*Only approach houses that are lit and stay away from pets that you do no
know.

Parents
*Young children should always be accompanied by an adult while trick or
treating.
*Look for costumes that are made of flame retardant material.
*Know where your children are going and when to expect them home.
*Let children know where you can be reached.
*Although tampering is rare, tell children to bring candy home to be
inspected before eating. Look at wrapping carefully and toss away anything
that looks suspect.

Home Owners
*Make sure the yard is clear of things such as ladders, hoses, dog leashes,
flowerpots, ect. That could trip visitors or hurt small kids.
*Pets get frightened at Halloween. To ensure the safety of your pet and
trick-or-treaters, keep your pet locked up.
*If you use candles in decorations, be sure to keep the flame away from
visitors.
*Health food alternatives for trick-or-treaters include packages of cheese
or peanut butter filled crackers, single serve boxes of cereal, and packaged
fruit.
*Non-food treats include plastic rings, pencils, stickers and erasers.
