All Faculty and Staff,

Please come join us tomorrow outside the University Center at 12:00 noon
for the first of our 2000 step walks around campus.  Faculty and students
from programs in the Health Science Coalition will be guiding walks along
four different courses each day for the next two weeks (from Wednesday,
10/6 through Wednesday, 10/20).  The walks will begin each day at 12:10
from the front of the UC and will be completed no later than 12:40.  This
two-week 2000 Step Noon Walk Program is the first activity of our UTC On
The Move program designed to encourage UTC faculty, staff and students to
increase their daily activity level by accepting the challenge to add at
least 2,000 steps per day to their current average baseline walking level.

The UTC On The Move program supports the Tennessee on the Move program
endorsed by President Peterson for the UT System.  For those of us who
purchased pedometers last month for that program, the 2,000 Step Noon Walk
Program will be a fun and convenient way to achieve the goal of increasing
your average baseline steps by 2,000 per day.

The 2,000 Step Noon Walk Program is open to everyone...the more the
merrier!  Participants will choose between four different courses, all
starting from the front of the University Center each day.  Look for the
colored signs to indicate which of the following groups you want to walk with:

1)  Yellow course -  Easy Does It
         for beginner walkers - 23 minute pace for 2000 steps  (0.8 miles
with a 2.1 ft stride length) -  level walking
                                 28 minute pace group will also be planned
for this course if requested

2)  Blue course - Getting Stronger Every Day
         for intermediate walkers  -  20 minute pace for 2000 steps (0.83
miles with a 2.2 ft stride length) - slight incline

3)  Green course - We Got the Power
         for experienced walkers  -  15 minute pace for 2000 steps (.083
miles with a 2.2 ft stride length) - steeper incline

4)   Red course - Strictly for the Hard Core
         for race/competitive walkers - 13 minute pace for 2000 steps (1.0
miles with a 2.4 ft stride length) - steady steep incline

Hope to see you tomorrow at noon in front of the University Center.  Don't
forget to wear comfortable walking shoes!
