Dr. Lauren Sewell and Dr. Dianne Bunch recently secured a $27,891 grant
from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission to fund a summer 2000
workshop entitled "Teaching Writing as Reflective Practice: Tapping
Regional Identities to Improve Student Writing." Twenty-five new middle
and high school English teachers from Hamilton, Bradley, Rhea, and Marion
Counties will attend the workshop and learn current strategies to help them
effectively teach students how to write. American students have scored
poorly on standardized tests that measure writing ability. This workshop
will give new English teachers the tools they need to build students'
confidence in their writing.

After the workshop, teachers will know how to teach writing as a process of
prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing situated within cultural
context. These new teachers will also learn how to use common terms for
teaching writing to help lessen students' confusion about writing as they
move from grade to grade. And finally, the teachers will be able to apply
their new knowledge of writing processes to develop and teach a unit on
writing critical narratives.

Please join in congratulating Dr. Sewell and Dr. Bunch on this important
award.
