"Discontinuities" an installation by Moema Furtado will open this
Thursday in the Main Gallery of the Cress Gallery of Art, Dept. of Art,
Fine Arts Center at 5:30. The artist will present a slide lecture about
her work and its influences in Room 356 FAC, followed by a reception at
the Gallery in the lobby of the Fine Arts Center.
Furtado holds a BS from Cornell University and an MFA from the
Uniersity of Wisconsin - Madison. A Native Brazilian who has lived in
the United States for 26 years, Furtado now resides in Knoxville with
her husband and 13 year old son. Since 1991 , she has served as an
Adjunct faculty member in the UTK Dept. of Art, and she is Director of
the Jewish Student Center on that campus also. Furtado has also
coordinated the Jewish Film Festival in Knoxville for the past two
years.
Her installations are constructed from natural materials and man-made
objects. The work deals with separation and displacement, with the
"duality of the intimate vs. the global".
confronting the Holocaust, death, decay on one hand and resurrection,
transformation, even transfiguration on the other. While challenging in
concept, it is quite visually poetic.
Also opening Thursday in Gallery II are UTC Dept. of Art recent alumni
Jessica Jones and Ezra Plemons with 2d and 3d work and video
installation. Both Jessica and Ezra will be present at the opening.
Hope to see you there!
