Once a year I like to remind UTC staff of the services of Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) located at the Doctors Building at 744 McCallie Avenue, Suite 410. 

We provided free civil legal assistance to low-income Tennesseans and seniors (60+) regardless of income. We are funded and regulated by the federal government. We also receive funding from various grants and the State of Tennessee. Often students and others qualify for our help. At our Chattanooga office we have five lawyers, as well as paralegals and other support staff. We also operate the Pro Bono Program in which local lawyers volunteer their services. The Chattanooga office serves the Tennessee counties of Hamilton, Bledsoe, Rhea, Sequatchie, and Marion.

The types of civil legal matters we handle include the following: consumer issues, landlord/tenant disputes, fair housing, predatory lending, debtor relief, unfair debt collection, elder abuse, living wills/advance health care directives, wills, juvenile justice matters, utility problems, health insurance, and assistance with public benefits such as unemployment, public housing, TennCare/Medicaid, Medicare, SSI, and food stamps. We cannot handle criminal matters.
