---------------------

Specifics:

The Instructional Excellence Awards Program provides individual
faculty with funding of up to $1,500 for the purpose of the
improvement of instruction.

I-E grants are to purchase instructional resources, develop
components of instructional programs, purchase teaching aids, or
learn a new teaching skill.

Grants are not to support faculty disciplinary research or
dissemination of research, for travel to professional meetings
(unless the theme of the meeting is teaching improvement within the
discipline).

I-E grants are not used for annual salary (a responsibility of the
University), overload compensation or summer pay, or for the purchase
of release time from teaching to work on the project.

The goals of the Instructional Excellence program are to:

* Directly improve instructional quality at UTC.

* Perpetuate a strengthening commitment to instructional excellence
and service to students by faculty.

* Assist new faculty in the development of teaching skills and help
senior faculty maintain enthusiasm for the college teaching
profession.

* Provide important instructional aids where not available through
normal university budget resources.

* Provide opportunities for innovative curricular efforts to ensure
that UTC maintains its historical commitment to student-centered
academic excellence.

The charge to the Instructional Excellence Committee is to solicit at
leat once each year proposals from faculty and from those proposals
to select award recipients. The committee further is charged with
encouraging university-wide teaching improvement.

All full-time faculty are eligible to apply through the submission of
a written request for funding. Proposals should be sent to Kit
Rushing, Department of Communication (3003), 311 Frist Hall. The
deadline for this year's first round of considerations is Friday,
October 11.

Proposals should include:

a description of the project including a problem statement,
methodology, and a description of the relationship of the proposal to
the goals of the instructional excellence program;
the time frame in which the project is to be completed;
a detailed budget;
a brief letter of support from the petitioner's department head.

Individual proposals are limited to $1,500. Groups may seek up to $3,000.

Delimits:

Funding may not be used for salary stipends for UTC faculty, for the
purchase of release time from instruction to undertake the project,
or for travel for the purpose of attending or presenting at

is specifically the teaching of the professional discipline);
however, funds may be used to cover costs for attendance at, or
sponsorship of workshops or seminars designed to teach new
instructional skills or technologies.

Funds may also be used to purchase or develop instructional materials
