Amy-Jill Levine, Carpenter professor of New Testament and director of the
Carpenter Program in Religion, Gender, and Sexuality at Vanderbilt, is the
featured speaker for the 8th Aiken Exploratory Theology Lecture at St. Luke
Untied Methodist Church, Thursday, 18 October, at 7 PM. This event is
sponsored jointly by St. Luke and the Mizpah Congregation, which will
present Prof. Levine as guest speaker at the Friday evening Sabbath service
on 19 October at 7:30 PM. The public is invited to both. For directions to
St. Luke, call 877-6447; for directions to Mizpah (adjoining the UTC
campus), call 267-9771.
Pro. Levine's topic Thursday is "Jesus in His Jewish Context: Stereotypes,
Misunderstandings, and Hopes for Interfaith Dialogue." At Mizpah, she will
discuss "Jews and Jesus: Problems and Possibilities."
Prof. Levine humorously describes herself as a "Yankee Jewish feminist who
teaches New Testament in a predominantly Protestant seminary in the buckle
of the Bible Belt."
She has previously spoken at UTC under the auspices of the Department of
Philosophy and Religion.
