Dear Colleagues,

As you have probably read in the most recent issue of The University Echo, a
wonderfully energetic and altruistic group of students, faculty, and staff
has formed The UTC Committee for Tsunami Relief. While I am proud to say
that the impetus has come from students in The University Honors Program,
the committee has both broad representation and focused goals.

The purpose of the committee is to unite campus and community in raising
funds to help Sarvodaya, a partnering Sri Lankan non-governmental
organization, in reconstructing the physical, emotional and psychological
life of Sri Lankan orphans.

I would appreciate your announcing the following information to your
students in classes and other forums:

The Committee has launched "The Blue String Campaign," offering donors a
blue string to wear around their wrists - a gesture based loosely based on a
Sri Lankan custom. Donors wear the strings to acknowledge that they will
not forget the victims of this disaster and that we can all play a role in
helping.

The Blue Sting Campaign will hold a kick-off fund-raiser Feb. 1-3,
attempting to involve all 8,696 students at UTC in helping tsunami victims
by collecting $1 from each student (tables will be located in the UC).
Donors can mail cash contributions and checks to the ³Blue String Campaign²
fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga. The UTC Committee
for Tsunami Relief will place all cash donations from the student drive into
the same CFCG fund.
