Dr. Elizabeth Guthrie of Biological and Environmental Sciences has been
awarded $39,819 by the Ohio State to support the Environmental
Molecular Interfaces on the Chemical and Biological Reactivity of Pollutants
(EMSI) Project. This is the second year of funding from the Ohio State
University
Research Foundation for this research project.

In the first year, Dr. Guthrie and her colleagues identified a new petroleum
metabolite that had not yet been identified in sediment microcosms. This
year’s EMSI Project involves collaboration between UTC, the Wood’s Hole
Oceanographic Institution, Ohio State University’s Department of Chemistry,
San Diego’s Office of Naval Research, and Exxon Mobil Corporation. Research
conducted by Dr. Guthrie and her staff include petroleum contaminant aging in
soils and sediments and the effect of aging on the pollutant toxicity and
transformation over a period of time. The sediments, which are provided by
Exxon Mobil Corporation, address issues of photoremediation and natural
revegetation of aged contaminated sediments at refineries.

This project is exemplary in providing research opportunities for
graduate students while also helping the National Science Foundation
with research to maintain a healthy and uncontaminated environment.

Best wishes to Dr. Guthrie for the success of this project.
