Hey, folks:
It's time again to say thanks to Ms. Sasse and to Allied Arts for
ArtsChatt. And I want to send my personal for all they do for the
University and in particular for their support of events in the Fine Arts
Center. Funding from Allied Arts is directly responsible for many events,
including the workshop at 11:00 am on Monday and the Race for the Cure
appearance by Nnennna Freelon and T. S. Monk this week. Did you know they
also help the Cadek Conservatory and the Southeast Center? Where would our
city be, not just the artists, without the support of its citizens for the
cultural life of our region? And Allied Arts is a foremost advocate for
that cultural life from which we all benefit.
Please don't forget that the Fine Arts Center has several important events
this week:
Running through October 10, 2001 the Cress Gallery of Art is showing the
Department of Art Biennial Faculty Exhibition.
Thursday 8 pm Cadek Chamber Orchestra,
featuring Clarinetist Nikolas Tejero
Friday 8 pm UTC Symphony Orchestra,
performing, appropriately, patriotic American music
Friday 8 pm University Theatre Company
and Saturday 8 pm The Importance of Being Earnest
Sunday 7:30 pm T. S. Monk and Nnenna Freelon perform in the Dorothy
Patten Series. Tickets are flying out the door.
From all of us at the Fine Arts Center, thanks for your patronage!!

>We had a technical glitch yesterday and didn't get ArtsChatt out on Monday
>as we like to do. Sorry for the lateness.
>
>Fall is definitely in the air, which means lots of outdoor festivals, art
>and craft shows, and fairs. Add those to the mix of concerts, plays and
>exhibits, and you've got a busy season for the arts. In fact, the arts will
>be in high gear between now and Christmas, so hang on to your hat and get
>out there!
>
>This Friday brings the last Nightfall concert for the year, but what a
>finish. Grammy-winner Burning Spear will bring his brand of reggae to the
>stage at 8:00. If you prefer something indoors, St. Paul's Episcopal
>Church is presenting German concert pianist Burkhard Schliessmann in
>concert at 7:00.
>
>For family fun, take your children or grandchildren to Oak Street
>Playhouse's original puppet theatre production of "The Nightingale," a
>thoroughly delightful telling of the classic fairy tale. The puppet theatre
>at Oak Street Playhouse is one of the best-kept secrets in town, and if you
>haven't seen one of their shows, you ought to take this one in. It runs
>next weekend, too.
>
>Wind up the workweek with the second annual Gallery Hop, sponsored by the
>Hunter and Houston Museums, the Association for Visual Artists, and several
>local galleries. A CARTA shuttle will take you to all of them. What a
>great way to keep up with the local art scene.
>
>Saturday evening, Choral Arts of Chattanooga presents its opening concert
>featuring Metropolitan Opera soprano, Stella Zambalis, in a variety of
>sacred and operatic works. This concert promises to be beautiful and
>moving, and a fitting experience in light of the past weeks' tragedies.
>
>And of course, this weekend brings the Hamilton County Fair. I don't know
>about you, but it's the closest I get to pigs and cows all year, and it's
>great family fun. Lots of food, music, silly contests, and all the things
>you expect from an old-fashioned fair.
>
