If you are using Windows XP or ME, your computer is *not* safe.
Microsoft has announced a very serious security problem is the
Windows XP and ME operating systems, and it also affects users
of Internet connection sharing in Windows 98. The FBI warns
users of these operating systems to fix your computers
http://www.nipc.gov/ as soon as possible. It is *very* important
that you fix your computer if you are using these version of Windows.

Many of you many be running ME at home, if you bought a computer
in the last couple of years. You may also be using Internet
connection sharing if you have multiple computers sharing a modem
with Windows 98. You may be using a version of Windows XP if
you bought a really recent computer.

You can read more about it and download the patch at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-059.asp Or, go to www.microsoft.com and click on the link for
"Patch Windows Now". You can also use the Windows Update tool in
Internet Explorer, which will install all security patches available.

At UTC, Windows XP is the newest Windows and you would only be
running it if you installed it yourself or you bought a recent computer
and did not follow the Technology Support Help Desk recommendation
to get Windows 98 or 2000. However, if you are running XP at UTC,
you may call the help desk for assistance in installing this patch, if
you need it. You are not likely be running ME or the Internet Connection
Sharing for Windows 98 at UTC (outside the dormitories).

You can determine the version of Windows you are running by clicking
on the START menu, then Settings, then Control Panel, then System.

Students may submit requests for help desk assistance at
