PERSPECTIVES 2003:  The Raymond B. Witt lecture Series
"Healing Hate for a Better Quality of Life" will be held January 21-24, and
committee members would like to invite students, faculty and staff to
attend.

Tuesday, January 21, 8 p.m. will be the first showing of "Journey to a Hate
Free Millennium," a powerful documentary produced and directed by Brent
Scarpo and Martin Bedogne.  The project includes conversations with the
family and friends of those murdered during hate crimes, including Matthew
Shephard in Wyoming, whose body was left hanging on a fence; dragging
victim James Byrd of Jasper, Texas; the students of Columbine High School
and Holocaust victims.  Brent Scarpo will be on campus Wednesday, January
22 at 2 p.m. to lecture and show scenes from the documentary (location to
be announced) and the lecture and scenes from the documentary will be shown
again Wednesday, January 22 at 8 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall, UTC
Fine Arts Center.

Chief Counsel Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery
, AL will speak on race, sexuality and gender stereotypes Thursday, January
23 at
12:15 p.m. (location to be announced).  Beginning in 1967, Dees began
taking controversial cases that were highly unpopular in the white
community.  He continued to pursue equal opportunities for minorities and
the poor, and along with his partner saw the need for a non-profit
organization dedicated to seeking justice, which grew into the Southern

A student panel of diverse students is being planned for 11 a.m. on Friday,
January 24.  More details will be provided as they become available.
