In an effort to make the State's roadways safer and more secure, the
Tennessee Trucking Association (TTA), in coordination with the U.S.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the American Trucking
Association (ATA), recently received a grant to launch the "Highway Watch."
program throughout the State and train 7,000 Tennesseans free-of-charge.
Administered by TTA, "Highway Watch." is aimed at increasing safety and
enhancing security to our roadways and infrastructure. "Highway Watch."
rapidly reports information that can help thwart possible terrorist plots,
communicate road safety incidents and provide aid in crisis.
"Highway Watch." is a one-hour course that takes advantage of the skills,
experience and road smarts of our drivers today. Transportation
professionals (truck, school bus, delivery drivers, etc.), law enforcement,
first responders, and others are trained to "Be On the Lookout" when
traveling Tennessee's highways. Participants learn how to detect criminal
or terrorist activity, how to report emergencies, and the appropriate
numbers to call. Participants also learn how to cope with road rage, drunk
drivers, and other potential hazards.
A "Highway Watch." Train-The-Trainer, which is a four-hour course, will be
offered in each of the State's homeland security districts:
