Chancellor Stacy asked that I share his media statement with the campus.
A statement from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
Chancellor Bill Stacy
August 22, 2001
RE: State budget cuts to higher education
"We have received word from the Governor's Office that funding to higher
education must be cut . Over the past few years, we have been working to
reduce administrative costs on our campus and appreciate Governor
Sundquist's advice for us to handle the cuts in ways to preserve academic
quality. President Fly has indicated that the total cuts for UT will be
about $4.5 million, and that should translate to about $500,000 for the UTC
campus.
"Certainly, this cut hurts us at a time when we are already facing less
than adequate funding. This latest cut takes away equipment dollars that we
would have allocated to the academic departments. It also is about a 1
percent raise for faculty and staff.
"This reduction in state appropriations comes on top of nearly a decade of
Tennessee's inability to fund its higher education formula. We hope we have
another chance on another day to express the value of higher education to
Tennessee and to illustrate the loss to our citizens in limiting their
opportunities for access to the state's colleges and universities."
