I hadn't planned on jumping in on this one because it SHOULD be common
practice to try and keep some kind of control over who is roaming around our
buildings. Silly me, I had assumed that some kind of measures were in place
to control these issues. I, for one, do NOT want to be harassed by some
door-to-door salesman coming in to my place of work trying to sell me stuff
that I neither need, nor want during business hours when I'm *supposed* to
be on the clock. That's absolutely ridiculous, and I have way too many
other more important things to do. It also irritates me that I seem to be
getting a whole lot more telemarketers calling me at my desk, trying to sell
me everything from health insurance to computers to office supplies to (get
this one!) home spas and Jacuzzis! I don't have time for that! And that's
not even addressing the safety issues. This is a serious problem that needs
to be taken care of NOW. UTC is becoming way too much of a target for this
kind of stuff.

My point exactly Michael! And referencing what Mary Coleman asked about not
knowing who to question, that's my point exactly Mary!

I have just gone through an exercise in futility. I was just approached in
the hallway outside of my office, by a young man who came up to me and asked
if I went to the Eclipse Salon downtown. When I told him no, that I wasn't
familiar with that salon, he began to tell me all about these four different
packages of services I could get for FREE! Well, I was a little leary at
first and reluctant to listen but he persisted and then showed me a flyer
with the packages and services listed and said that I could get $355 worth
of services FREE from this salon. Well it sounded too good to be true and
then I saw on the right side the amount of $55. I asked him when that
amount had to be paid and he said that it had to be paid to HIM right now.
I could charge it or pay cash. When I declined and said I didn't have that
amount of money on me right now, he didn't leave the flyer or any
information but just acted incredulous that I would not give him the $55 for
$355 worth of services NOW. I declined and he went on his way. I came back
into my office and called Campus Police to tell them about what I had read
previously on RAVEN and asked them about his young man and solicitors in
general. The officer that answered didn't really know but said that he
"thought they were supposed to check in somewhere, maybe at the Dean's or
something." I explained that there was a Dean for each college on campus and
he didn't know what to tell me but said that he would check which he did.
He then said they were to check in at Student Development. I was on my way
to the UC to get some lunch and stopped in at the University Center's
business office and asked there and was met with as much confusion about it
all as the young officer had. The girl at the desk said that if they were
using facilities on campus then they needed to register. I said they
weren't "setting up or using any facilities but walking around door to door"
and she said just walking around door to door was not allowed but when I
asked her what do we tell these people then or where do we send them or if
they had a policy for identifying these people as visitors or guests on
campus and something to show US that they have checked in and that "someone"
was aware that they had a right to be here. No one seemed to know anything
about that. I walked upstairs to Student Development to ask up there and
the lady at the desk really didn't know and then about that time, Jim Hicks
walked out and asked what the situation was and I explained it to him and he
said that anyone could come on campus if they registered first and that if
anyone was going around door to door, the Campus Police should be called. I
informed him that I had already spoken with Campus Police who referred me to
his office. I then asked about some policy for identification and he said
they really had no way of knowing who was walking around campus unless he
sees them and asks them. There is no "identification badge or tag" that
they are given to be here though.

Makes me feel REALLY SAFE here on campus!!

Hmm...what better cover could you come up with than to say you are a
book buyer which gives these people unfettered access to every building
on campus and gives them an excuse to be there.
