In association with its annual meeting and banquet, the UTC Chapter
of Sigma Xi will be hosting Dr. Steven Wallace from the Dept. of
Physics, Astronomy, and Geology at East Tennessee State University.
Dr. Wallace is lead scientist in charge of the excavations at the
Gray fossil site near Johnson City, TN. The Gray site is an
extraordinary fossil bed, a Miocene - Pliocene age (i.e., 4-8 million
year old) sinkhole that contains plant remains, insect remains, and
many vertebrates, including the oldest fossil mammals known from
Tennessee. Dr. Wallace will be giving two talks on Thursday, April 7.

The first will be held at 12 noon in Bretske 114 and is entitled
"Carnivores from the Hemphillian Gray Fossil Site: Indications of a
connection between the forested biomes of North America and Eurasia."

The second will be held at 7:30 pm in Grote 129. The talk is
entitled "Paleoecologic Interpretation of the Gray Fossil Site
(Hemphillian), Washington Co., Tennessee: With Special Emphasis on
Recent Finds."

The university community is invited to both talks. The evening talk
is also open to the general public.
