Dr. Bonnie Warren of the College of Education & Applied Professional
Studies recently received funding for the third year from the U.S. Department
of Education. This grant will support the Urban IMPACT Project.

The Urban IMPACT Project is a teacher quality partnership in which UTC is
the lead partner and recipient of grant support. Other partners include
the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Hamilton County Schools, Knox County
Schools and business leaders in Hamilton and Knox counties.

The project focuses on improving the preparation of pre-service teachers
for culturally diverse urban contexts and ensuring teachers’ long term
employment in high need schools. This project supports the development
of urban knowledge and skills necessary for new teachers to succeed and
be retained in the high needs environment.

During the first two years of the project, Dr. Warren developed and
collaborated on revising pre-service coursework and designing structures to
assure the successful induction of beginning teachers in urban contexts.
For Year 3, objectives includes expanding curriculum revision efforts
to increase pre-service teachers’ awareness of issues related to urban
schooling.

Best wishes to Dr. Warren for the continued success of this project.
