Dr. Ron Smith and Dr. Ossama Saleh, Professors in the Department of
Mathematics, recently received $70,831 for their project entitled
"Applications of Algebra, II" from the Tennessee Higher Education
Commission (THEC). This project will provide a professional development
opportunity for high school mathematics teachers from local counties.
Drs. Smith and Saleh have met with great success in conducting two
similar workshops in the past. This year's workshop focuses on teaching
mathematics through technological applications.
Each participant in the program will learn to use a TI-83+ calculator
and a Calculator-Based Laboratory (CBL2) to analyze real-world data from
a scientific perspective. Drs. Smith and Saleh are specifically reaching
out to high school teachers from schools with regionally poor
mathematics test scores. By empowering teachers to provide a strong
mathematics curriculum in high school, Drs. Saleh and Smith hope to
reduce the need for remedial mathematics courses in college.
Congratulations to Drs. Smith and Saleh! Your efforts to enhance
teaching techniques will provide area students the solid mathematics
background they will need to succeed in college.
