"Don't Fear the Regress"

Presented by Dr. Scott Aikin
Vanderbilt University Professor
Wednesday, October 10, 2007
3:00 Holt 304

Having knowledge requires that we be able to justify our commitments. We do
this with arguments. The premises for these arguments must also be
justified, which require further arguments, which require more arguments for
their premises. And so a regress of reasons looms. A variety of solutions
to this problem have traditionally been offered; however, only until
recently have any taken seriously the thought that we must give reasons on
to infinity. Professor Scott Aikin will outline the prospects for such a
view.
