Colleagues:

You may or may not know about the Talloires Declaration, but our Chancellor
(and hopefully President Peterson) has been asked to sign this document on
behalf of our campu(s).  Essentially, this declaration provides an impetus
for universities to work for environmental sustainability in all of their
actions.  To date over 350 campus leaders worldwide have signed this
declaration.  To read an example of the declaration please visit the

The group that is encouraging UTC (and other Tennessee institutions of
Higher Education) to sign the Talloires Declaration is the Sustainability in
Tennessee Higher Education group that formed after a Nashville conference in
March 2006.  This group is continuing to organize and will have a second
conference at Belmont College in Nashville on March 28-29, 2007.  During the
conference banquet on Wed, March 28th, the plan is to have as many Tennessee
Higher Ed Presidents, Chancellors, etc. sign the Talloires Declaration in
mass.  I certainly hope that Chancellor Brown will sign this document and
help UTC become a serious player in the establishment of a more livable
future for all Tennesseans.
