If students would be willing to walk three or four blocks, there is
plenty of parking. The Arena parking lots are more than half empty. The
problem is no one wants to walk any where. It is the same mentality that
a person will drive around at the mall for 20 minutes to get 15 feet closer
to the door. All anyone has to do is leave early enough that they give
themselves 15-20 minutes to walk to class, AND GET A LITTLE EXERCISE!!!

I agree that it would be a good idea to discourage freshmen (and perhaps all
residential students) from bringing cars to campus. I think if that were
the case, we wouldn't be having this discussion, because our commuter
students (and we are considered a "commuter campus," are we not?) would have
a place to park.

Also, I think it's sometimes easier to accuse people of "whining" than to
entertain the possibility that they have a legitimate concern. Yes, things
are bad all over, yes, we are an urban campus. Does that mean we can't
discuss a problem and wonder if there are solutions to it? My wondering
about it (whining?) was productive, because I found out about the shuttle
and alternative parking. Now I can tell my students who are "whining" about
these alternatives.

Subject: [UTCSTAFF] Final comment on parking

Of course I singled out freshmen. Like most universities where parking is a
commodity. In fact, in many of those universities freshman are not allowed
to have cars on campus at all during the first year. Rewarding those
students who have been here longer and proven they can last and will do the
work is common and makes sense for lots people. there are many ways
universities reward returning students. Also, any students in my classroom
learns not to complain unless they have facts beyond what they experience
for themselves. I quickly steer them to chat boards of students at other
schools so they can read for themselves what other people are doing or going
through. Wish we had the internet when I was in school. I would not have
felt so "put upon" and singled out and not have had so much ill feeling
toward my university as I would have known for a fact that the other music
students were going through the same thing and for the most part parking is
a common beef on every chat board I visit. You have no idea how many ill
though out whiny complaints on campuses all over the country start out with
"I paid Good money to." blah blah blah. So does every one else. And further.
as to the MTSU statement, there are 19 statements about how band parking is
at MTSU on a students chat board. Young people who have only come to UTC and
complain about parking have no more credibility to me than my daughter
complaining about how hard she works for the few dollars I give her in
allowance. 1. She is lucky to get an allowance 2. She does very little 3.
Other kids might get less or nothing at all. Her complaints come from
ignorance and lack of experience. I remember a girl at USF who complained
because she always had to park at the back of the lot (less than a hundred
yards form the building). My kids at Xavs complained about having to park
and ride the bus or train to school. My Kids at Kansas never complained even
though parking was worse than anywhere I have ever been but the kids at UTC
whine so much. After being at UF, USF, VT, KU, Xavs and UTC this is the best
I have seen and it is an urban campus with less room available. I am not
writing anymore because all that is happening is a bunch of people sitting
around feeling "put upon". Anytime one of my kids starts complaining with
the phrase "I paid good money.." No you did not.. You paid for exactly what
you got... common market kids, go somewhere else and you will find it is a
lot worse. What I know. my transfer students from UTK, MTSU UTM and Memphis
like it here better. The two times I lost kids to other schools one of them
came back and wished he had never left. Kids whine because that's what they
do and freshmen whine more because they lack experience. Adults whine for a
multitude of reasons. I do it too. But pick something important and
reasonable to whine about that is based on facts.
