"TO AID EDUCATION" has been the justification for "new and improved" forms
of taxing the American public for as long as I have been able to take
notice. Using history as our only true reference, there is absolutely no
reason to believe that another tax increase or new method of taxation will
do anything to help UTC or education in general. Look at what consolidation
of the city and county schools has done in Chattanooga. What was supposed
to result in decreased cost has instead given us a larger bureaucracy which
immediately requested more money while cutting services. The pay is so low
for Hamilton County teachers that recruiting and retention is extremely
difficult with Georgia schools paying appreciably more.

When will the American people start demanding accountablilty from
politicains?

Prudent use of available funds would better serve the people of Tennessee.
Stop paying able-bodied people not to work, plug the massive holes in the
health-care system where quality of treatment is going down while costs are
sky-rocketing, etc. Why should we give more money to a group of people
which has repeatedly shown that it can't "carry the mail".

Do you really believe what politicians say? I don't.

Morris E. Holder, Asst. Prof. of Engineering

Subject: [UTCSTAFF] Tax Reform
