Dear Colleagues:

President Peterson has approved the University's request to charge
laboratory fees for a limited set of studio and laboratory courses. I
thought it might be helpful for you to know of this new fee should a
student ask you about the expense.

We will begin charging this fee this Fall. Students will see these fees
added to their semester charges only if they are enrolled in one of the
designated courses. In essence, the list of studio and laboratory fees
is limited to those courses that have a 1-credit-hour laboratory
requirement that incurs specific expenses related to expendable
materials. For those courses that have separate 1-hour laboratory
courses, the fee will be assessed when the student registers for the
laboratory, not the lecture portion of the course. The 9 groups of
fees are:
	Art Lab Fees
Biology & Env Sci Lab Fees
	Chemistry Lab Fees
	Computer Science Lab Fees
	Education Lab Fees
	Engineering Lab Fees
Geology, Physics & Astronomy Lab Fees
Health & Human Performance Lab Fees
	Physical Therapy Lab Fees

A student will be assessed $25 for each studio or laboratory course in
which he or she enrolls. There is no cap for this fee. In other words,
if a student enrolls in 5 studio/laboratory courses, he or she will be
assessed $125. The student will also have to pay the fee if he or she is
required to repeat the course.

An important point to recognize is that the fee is nonrefundable if the
student drops the course after the first day of classes. You may want to
emphasize this point as you advise students.

Each department will have transferred to their operating budgets all
fees assessed for the studio and laboratory courses offered in each
academic term. Departments may use these fees only for the provision of
the laboratory.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
