    In answer to Kit Rushing's query about our willingness to fund at
current levels our football program, I think that the time is long overdue
to curtail drastically our expenses in this area. I agree with those who
have recommended dropping down a notch or more in our NCAA conference--if
we are to keep football at all. Our involvement in Finley stadium is a
disaster. If memory serves me well from my time on Faculty Council when
the stadium issue came up, we are committed to paying the interest on
bonds for its construction for 20 years or more and the payment will be
about $180,000/year. That white elephant is not going away, but we can
limit our expenses in the future.
    I don't think, however, that I am going to hold my breath until it
happens.
