Folks,

There are two chances to hear Dr. Al Gara (see below) speak on UTC's campus
on October 18, 2006.

The first is a breakfast meeting at the UTC University Center, 2nd floor,
Chickamauga Room at 8am. Reservation deadline is Friday, October 13th and
should be made by contacting Kelley Evatt ([log in to unmask]) at the
Chattanooga Technology Council.

The second opportunity is a talk that Dr. Gara will be giving at the
SimCenter at 11am. Please contact [log in to unmask] if interested in
attending

Dr. Alan Gara is the Chief Architect of the IBM BlueGene/L Supercomputer,
and was named an IBM Fellow, the highest award for an IBM technologist. His
design achieved the top spot in three consecutive TOP 500 lists for
supercomputing power. IBM BlueGene/L was lauded for its performance, and
innovative architecture that consumes much less power than other
supercomputers, the design uses common components to simplify manufacturing,
installation, use and maintenance.

Dr. Gara will talk about the architecture and design of the BlueGene/L
system as well as the future BlueGene/P project. Dr. Gara will be joined by
Dr. Henry McDonald, UTC 21st Century Chair of Excellence and Director of the
UT SimCenter at Chattanooga, who will represent the viewpoint of HPC related
to computational fluid dynamics and other emerging fields. Also, Mr. Neal
Bell, a senior member of the staff at UnumProvident, will be representing
the commercial aspects of HPC for line businesses such as insurance.

I wish to thank our partners in this activity - IBM, The Riverbend
Technology Institute and the Chattanooga Technology Council.
