I had many responses to my last e-mail, most supportive, all at least
polite. Thanks for the feedback. I didn't respond to most e-mails
because I knew I would be writing a follow-up of some sort. So here it
is.

With so many people in so many different positions within the
university sharing similar feelings about these annual United Way
proceedings, I can only respond that it is most important that we all
decide in such a way that is consistent with our respective beliefs and
philosophies. If you feel the campaign is proper and just, stand by it.
If you feel that you are unduly pressured, take a stand there as well.
I wish all philosophies and walks of life well.

This forum sometimes degenerates, but often, and I'd like to think more
often than not, does further the purpose of important discussion here.
To those fine thinkers on this campus who have inspired me and
supported me, I offer my sincere thanks. To those fine thinkers who
have challenged me and disagreed with me, whether I can to see things
your way or not, thanks as well.

(No, it's not a farewell speech. But the thanks needed to be given
sometime. Why not now?)
