COUNCIL OF DEANS
March 16, 1999

PRESENT: W. Aiken, S. Bellar, B. Berry, S. Delacroix, B. Desmond, L.
Fletcher, J. Harbaugh, G. Janeksela, T. Summerlin, M. Tanner, M. Willis

Commencement
Dr. Berry asked the Council of Deans for their thoughts on printing the
title of the student's thesis and the name of the committee chair in the
Commencement bulletin. All were in favor of this recommendation.

Departmental By-laws
Dr. Berry distributed copies of the departmental by-laws as submitted to
date to all members of the Council of Deans. He asked that the deans
review and be prepared to discuss them at the next meeting. If any by-laws
come in from other departments, the Provost's office will forward them to
the council.

Provost's Announcements
Tenure and promotion documents are due to the Provost by March 17. Dr.
Berry reminded deans that the master plan surveys are due to the Provost's
office by Friday, March 19.

School/College/Division Reports
Dr. Bill Aiken announced that he and Mr. Hugh Prevost, Director of
Cooperative Education, had attended a meeting in Miami to recruit students
through the National Student Exchange Program. The meeting was very
promising, and they were successful in recruiting eight students for the
fall semester. He will send a list of the names to the appropriate deans
so that a letter can be sent to the students.

Dr. Aiken also announced that the Outcomes Development Group has reviewed
departments' student outcomes statements and will be sending back to the
departments any revisions that need to be made. He thanked the deans for
the great progress that was made in the last month.

Dr. Mary Tanner announced that the Each One, Reach One program was featured
in the magazine, Chattanooga.

Dr. Berry congratulated the College of Engineering for hiring two minority
faculty for next year. He encouraged the other deans to work at making
progress in hiring minority faculty in their respective areas. He has also
asked Dr. Arfken to identify graduate candidates who would be eligible for
the Grow Your Own program.

Adjournment
A motion to adjourn was moved and seconded.

Respectfully submitted,
Barbara Verhine
